There was an interesting article in Newsday about the volume of new foreclosure filings on Long Island, NY:

Newsday: "The ups and downs of new LI foreclosure filings", by Ellen Yan (June 15, 2011)

This seems to have been the local writeup of the reported RealtyTrac May foreclosure metrics.

The figures would seem to indicate that the foreclosure mills in New York State have still not found a way to get past their "minor paperwork problems".

That and the fact that NY state has toughen up the mandatory mediation foreclosure for lenders and requires lawyers filing on behalf of the plaintiffs to verify their paperwork prior filing in court. Essentially, fifty percent of the work for homeowners is showing in for mediation with the required paperwork and keep up with the many following sessions. Many of the state county bar associations provides Foreclosure Pro Bono help. In the end it does not guarantee a modification, but very few judges in the state will sign off on behalf of the lenders if they are unwilling and show a lack of faith to negotiate on with the homeowners ( IndyMac Bank v. Yano-Horosk).   Thanks for pointing it out.
