The best way that I've found to track corporate entities is through the Secretary of State's office of any given state. And if you really want to get into meat and bones - SEC filings if the entity is large enough or a subsidiary of a publicly traded company. From my own limited experience, the BBB simply is not a reliable source of information for, well, anything....

Mike DILLON has this precisely RIGHT.  Moreover, it should be noted that various states require different levels of detail as to filings by foreign corporations.  So there is some merit in checking the corporate filings in more than one state.

Many states also have assumed name statutes.  Corporations are sometimes allowed to trade or do business under ASSUMED NAMES.  Assumed names are sometimes registered centrally statewide, but very often these are also registered down at the county level.  It VARIES as to whether a registration in one county would enable a corporation to trade under an assumed name STATEWIDE.  But almost certainly an assumed name filing in one state would NOT permit that corporation to trade under an assumed name in another state.

It seems as though it would be a very useful site feature to ADD PAGES which reflect corporate identites of major mortgage originators and major mortgage servicers.
