Attorney John Yanchek sentenced for bank fraud, money laundering.

Tampa Bay Business Journal

Sarasota attorney John Yanchek must forfeit $7.6 million and spend five years in prison for his role in conspiring to defraud banks, U.S. District Judge James D. Whittemore ruled Monday.

Yanchek, a sole practitioner, pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to commit loan fraud, bank fraud and money laundering, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida.

Yanchek’s sentence follows the sentencing last month of Michael Tringali, one-time owner of G&T Land Development LLC and Steeplechase Properties LLC. Tringali is expected to serve 41 months in prison for his part in the conspiracy that involved $83 million and seven banks.

Tringali testified against co-conspirator and business consultant Larry Nardelli, owner of Elba International LLC. Nardelli was convicted in February of conspiring to commit mortgage fraud, money laundering and making false statements to banks, but he has not yet been sentenced.

Seven financial institutions — Orion Bank, Mercantile Bank, Bank Atlantic, Coast Bank, Fifth Third Bank, Wachovia Bank and First State Bank — were defrauded through bogus real estate transactions, according to court records.

Neil Mohamed Husani, the accused mastermind of the scam, is awaiting extradition from Jordan.

The FBI and Internal Revenue Service investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Adelaide Few and Terry Zitek of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Middle District of Florida.
