  • The Frederick Community Action Agency's program to counsel homeowners struggling with potential foreclosures across the state will receive a $50,000 boost.

The award comes from a share of $1 million made available to 17 counseling agencies statewide by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development under the Home Owners Preserving Equity, or HOPE, initiative.

"These awards will help counseling agencies provide existing homeowners critical information to resolve ongoing foreclosure issues and assist potential home buyers in avoiding foreclosure altogether," Gov. Martin O'Malley said in a statement.

The HOPE initiative is a $111 million program to stem a potential foreclosure crisis through financing, incentives, education and other support.

The Lifeline Refinance Mortgage Program will help homeowners who were victims of predatory or "exotic" mortgages with assistance refinancing. The Department of Housing estimates assistance will be provided to 500 households.
